EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the quintessential charm of Kroonstad, a historic town nestled on the banks of the Orange River in the Orange River Colony of South Africa, circa 1905. The image showcases the picturesque Cross Street, with its cobblestone road winding its way through the heart of the town. The Methodist Church, a striking Gothic architectural masterpiece, stands proudly at the end of the street, its tall spire reaching towards the clear blue sky. The church, with its intricate stonework and stained glass windows, was a beacon of faith and community for the town's residents during the early 1900s. The photograph is filled with the hustle and bustle of daily life, as pedestrians make their way along the street, dressed in the fashion of the era. The women, clad in long, flowing skirts and bonnets, and the men in suits and bowler hats, add to the sense of history and tradition that permeates the town. The horse-drawn carts and carriages, a common mode of transportation during this time, can also be seen making their way along the road. The Orange River Colony, established in 1854, was a British-controlled territory in South Africa, and Kroonstad, founded in 1856, was one of its major towns. The town's strategic location along the Orange River made it an important trading hub, and its rich agricultural lands attracted settlers from all over the world. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, providing a window into the history and culture of Kroonstad during the early 1900s.
