EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print depicts the renowned French artist Joseph Marie Vien (1716-1809), who held the prestigious title of "Premier Peintre du Roi," or First Painter to the King, under Louis XV and Louis XVI. Vien was a leading figure in the French art scene during the late Baroque and Rococo periods, known for his history paintings and portraits. Born in Paris, Vien studied under the tutelage of Jean-Baptiste Benoit-Joseph Marsy and Jean-Baptiste Greuze. He began his career as a history painter, producing works that often depicted scenes from mythology and the Bible. His mastery of light and color, as well as his ability to capture the human form with sensitivity and grace, earned him a reputation as one of the finest painters of his time. In 1755, Vien was appointed as a professor at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he taught for over 30 years. He also served as the director of the school from 1770 until his retirement in 1783. Vien's students included some of the most prominent artists of the late 18th century, including Jacques-Louis David and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. This print captures Vien in the later years of his life, with a serious expression and dressed in the formal attire of a respected artist and academic. The artist's brush and palette are visible on the table before him, a testament to his lifelong dedication to his craft. The intricately detailed background, with its ornate furnishings and bookshelves filled with volumes on art and history, further emphasizes Vien's status as a leading figure in the French art world.
