EDITORS COMMENTS
This beautiful photograph captures a poignant moment from a Japanese wedding ceremony in the 1910s, as the bride, dressed in traditional attire, shares a ritualistic drink of sake with her new parents-in-law. The act of drinking sake together is an essential part of the Shinto wedding ceremony in Japan, symbolizing the union of two families and the expression of love and respect between the bride and her new parents. The bride's tender gaze towards her parents-in-law and their warm smiles reflect the deep sense of connection and unity that is at the heart of this traditional Japanese matrimonial rite. This historical image offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Japanese weddings and the importance of family in Japanese society.
