EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the intense gaze and distinguished presence of James Abram Garfield, the 20th President of the United States (1881). Painted by Danish artist Ole Peter Hansen Balling (1823-1906) in 1881, the year of Garfield's presidency, this masterpiece is now housed in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C. Born in Moreland, Ohio, in 1831, Garfield rose to prominence as a Republican politician, serving in the House of Representatives and the Senate before being elected to the presidency. Known for his long, flowing beard and impeccable attire, Garfield is depicted here in a formal suit, his collar and bow tie neatly pressed. His piercing eyes and prominent nose convey a sense of intelligence and determination. Despite his brief tenure as president, Garfield left an indelible mark on American history. Tragically, he was assassinated just six months into his term by an assassin's bullet. This portrait serves as a poignant reminder of his leadership and legacy. The intricate details of Balling's brushstrokes bring Garfield's face to life, from the creases in his shirt to the subtle curves of his ear. The artist's skillful use of light and shadow adds depth and texture to the image, making it a captivating work of art and an invaluable historical document.
