EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the essence of horse racing history with the grand trotter Clingstone, skillfully driven by G.H. Saunders. The image, taken around 1883 by Rysdyk, showcases the horse in full stride during a trotting race. Clingstone, a magnificent bay horse, is the offspring of dam Gretchen and sire Hambletonian. His powerful and agile form is a testament to the breeding of champion trotters during this era. Saunders, an accomplished driver, expertly navigates Clingstone through the racecourse, demonstrating the delicate balance between horse and driver required for success in trotting competitions. The horse's focus and determination are evident in its posture, as it strains towards the finish line. The influence of Hambletonian, a legendary sire in the history of trotting, is clear in Clingstone's striking appearance and athletic abilities. The dam, Gretchen, also played a significant role in Clingstone's development, passing on her strong genes and contributing to his impressive racing prowess. This photograph is a precious reminder of the rich history of horse racing and the importance of the trotting tradition. The image not only showcases the beauty and power of the horses but also highlights the skill and dedication of the drivers and trainers who brought them to the racetrack. The legacy of Clingstone and its lineage continues to inspire and captivate racing enthusiasts to this day.
