EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the grandeur of the Grand Oriental Hotel in Colombo, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), during the early 1910s. Located on York Street in the heart of the colonial city, the hotel was a symbol of British influence and luxury in the Indian subcontinent. The large, imposing building is adorned with sunblinds and boasts an air of elegance and sophistication. The bustling street scene outside the hotel reveals the vibrant life of Colombo during this era. People go about their daily business, some carrying heavy loads on their heads or in rickshaws, while others engage in animated conversations. Rickshaws, a common mode of transportation during this time, line the streets, adding to the cacophony of sounds and colors. The Grand Oriental Hotel was a popular destination for travelers and dignitaries alike, offering luxurious accommodations and world-class dining experiences. The hotel's reputation as a premier establishment in the British Empire attracted many prominent figures, including politicians, businessmen, and artists. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich history and cultural diversity of Colombo during the 1910s, a time when the city was at the crossroads of East and West.
