EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment of joy and relaxation for a group of girls from St Chad's Home in Leeds, as they enjoy a day at the seaside in Filey during the 1920s. The Waifs and Strays Society, a charitable organization dedicated to providing shelter and care for destitute, neglected, and orphaned children, had opened St Chad's Home in Weetwood Lane, Headingley, in 1889. The girls in the photograph, dressed in simple summer frocks and wearing sun hats, are fully engaged in the simple pleasure of building sandcastles with their buckets and spades. Their laughter and playful banter fill the air, creating a sense of normalcy and happiness in their lives. The beach at Filey, with its golden sand and clear blue waters, serves as a beautiful backdrop to this heartwarming scene. The photograph offers a glimpse into the past, reminding us of the importance of providing care and support for children in need and the simple joys that can be found in the simple things in life.
