EDITORS COMMENTS
General View of Ghardaia: A Vibrant Algerian Town in the 1910s (circa) This evocative photograph captures the bustling heart of Ghardaia, an ancient Algerian town nestled in the heart of the M'zab Valley in North Africa. Dating back to the 11th century, Ghardaia is renowned for its unique architectural style, characterized by whitewashed houses with blue windows and doors, and its labyrinthine layout. In this image, taken circa 1910s, the town square comes alive with activity. Men and women, dressed in traditional clothing, move about the square, engaging in conversation or conducting business deals. The energy and vibrancy of the town are palpable, as the people of Ghardaia go about their daily lives. The town itself can be seen perched atop the hill in the background, its white houses and blue windows forming a striking contrast against the arid landscape. The hill provides a natural fortification, making Ghardaia a strategic and defensible location. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich history and culture of Ghardaia, a town that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. Despite the passage of time, the people of Ghardaia continue to preserve their unique way of life, making it a must-visit destination for travelers seeking to explore the hidden gems of North Africa.
