EDITORS COMMENTS
Francois Lemoyne: A Master of French Baroque Painting (1688-1737) This exquisite print showcases the captivating portrait of Francois Lemoyne, a renowned French Baroque painter of the early 18th century. Born in Paris in 1688, Lemoyne was a prolific artist who made significant contributions to the art world with his masterful depictions of mythological scenes, religious subjects, and portraits. Lemoyne's artistic journey began at a young age when he was apprenticed to the studio of the renowned painter, Claude Lefèbvre. He later studied under the tutelage of Charles Le Brun, the official painter to King Louis XIV. Lemoyne's talent was soon recognized, and he was awarded the prestigious title of Premier Peintre du Roi (First Painter to the King) in 1718. This portrait captures Lemoyne in the prime of his career, with his piercing gaze and a confident expression that reflects his artistic prowess. The artist is depicted wearing the robes of a monk, a nod to his membership in the Confrérie de la Trinité, a Parisian religious brotherhood. The intricately detailed folds of his robe and the delicate rendering of his facial features demonstrate Lemoyne's exceptional skill in capturing the human form. Lemoyne's art was highly regarded during his lifetime and continues to be celebrated today. His works can be found in numerous museums and galleries around the world, including the Louvre Museum in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This print serves as a testament to Lemoyne's enduring legacy as a master of French Baroque painting.
