EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative portrait, Chevalier Francesco Matania (1884-1957) is captured in the prime of his operatic career upon his return to London in 1920. Having spent the war years in Italy, Matania's presence in the city was met with great anticipation, as he brought with him not only his exceptional vocal talents but also a deep understanding of voice training and the art of singing. The Tatler reported that Matania, an experienced operatic singer, had made a special study of vocal technique and had opened a studio at the prestigious Wigmore Hall Studios in Marylebone. Here, he imparted his knowledge and expertise to a new generation of singers, helping them to hone their craft and reach their full potential. Later in life, Matania would share his brother Fortunino Matania's (1871-1941) work space at 104, Priory Road, Kilburn, London. Fortunino was a renowned artist and magazine illustrator, and the brothers' collaboration proved to be a harmonious blend of music and art. Francesco Matania's portrait exudes a sense of confidence and refinement, reflecting his status as a respected operatic singer and professor of singing. His piercing gaze and elegant attire convey a deep sense of focus and dedication to his craft. This image offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable artist and educator, whose influence on the world of opera and vocal training continues to be felt to this day.
