EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts a pivotal moment in French history during the Liberal Revolution of 1848. On February 22, 1848, the people of France rose up against King Louis Philippe of Orleans, demanding political reforms and an end to their monarch's rule. The situation came to a head on February 24, as the National Assembly, the seat of political power, was invaded by the citizens. In this image, a diverse crowd of men, women, and children, armed with flags and makeshift weapons, charge towards the National Assembly. Soldiers with bayonets stand their ground, creating a tense and volatile atmosphere. The age of the children in the crowd adds a poignant reminder of the all-encompassing nature of the revolution, as it was not just the adults who were driven to fight for their future. The Second Republic was proclaimed on February 24, marking the end of the Bourbon monarchy and the beginning of a new era in French politics. This engraving serves as a powerful reminder of the determination and courage of the French people during this period of European history. The vibrant colors and intricate details of the image bring the events of 1848 to life, transporting us back in time to witness this historic moment.
