EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning detail from Bernini's masterpiece, the Fountain of the Four Rivers in Rome's Navona Square, showcases the river god Ganges and the Obelisk of Domitian. Created in 1651 during the Baroque era, this European work of art is a testament to the artistic brilliance of Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680). The Fountain of the Four Rivers is a magnificent marble sculpture that represents the four major rivers known in the ancient world: the Nile, the Danube, the Ganges, and the Plate. Each river god is depicted as a powerful, mythological figure, symbolizing the dominance and abundance of water. Ganges, the god of the Indian subcontinent's most sacred river, is shown here with a flowing beard, a turban, and a long, curved moustache. He holds a conch shell in one hand and a small elephant, a symbol of India, in the other. The river god's muscular form and intricate details, such as the veins on his arms and the texture of his beard, demonstrate Bernini's exceptional skill as a sculptor. The Obelisk of Domitian, an ancient Egyptian obelisk, stands proudly behind Ganges. This monumental structure, adorned with hieroglyphics, was originally erected in Egypt around 25 AD and was later brought to Rome in the 1st century AD. Bernini's integration of this historical artifact into the Fountain of the Four Rivers not only adds to the sculpture's grandeur but also highlights the cultural exchange between Europe and the ancient world during this period.
