EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative title page marks the first issue of Blast: Review of the Great English Vortex, published on the 20th of June, 1914. Edited by the influential figurehead of the Vorticist movement, Wyndham Lewis, this seminal literary magazine was a pioneering force in the British modernist art scene, just 33 days before the outbreak of World War One. The Vorticists, a group of artists and writers, sought to break away from the traditional artistic styles of the time and embrace the modern, industrial world. Blast was their platform to showcase their revolutionary ideas, with its provocative name reflecting the destructive and transformative power they saw in modernity. The title page, with its bold, angular typography and vibrant colors, is a visual representation of the Vorticist ethos. The use of the term 'Vortex' signified the swirling, chaotic energy of modern life, which the Vorticists aimed to capture and harness in their art and literature. Blast only published two issues before the war disrupted its production, but its impact on the literary and artistic world was significant. It introduced the public to the works of key Vorticist figures such as Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, and Rebecca West, and helped to establish the movement as a major force in the modernist art scene. Today, this first issue of Blast stands as a testament to the groundbreaking ideas and innovative spirit of the Vorticists, and a reminder of the transformative power of art and literature in shaping cultural narratives.
