EDITORS COMMENTS
Felix Maria de Samaniego (1745-1801): A Tribute to the Spanish Fabulist in Bronze This evocative bust of Felix Maria de Samaniego (1745-1801), the renowned Spanish fabulist, stands proudly in the picturesque town of Laguardia, Alava, Basque Country, Spain. Created by the skilled hands of Vicente Larrea Aldama (1852-1922) in 1883, this neoclassical masterpiece is a testament to the enduring legacy of one of Spain's greatest literary figures. Born in the 18th century, de Samaniego is celebrated for his extensive collection of fables, known as "El Abejedo" or "The Beehive," which was published in 1794. These tales, inspired by the works of Jean de La Fontaine and other European fabulists, were written in the Basque language and reflected the customs, traditions, and folklore of his native region. The bust, crafted in bronze, captures the essence of de Samaniego's wisdom and wit. The open-air setting of Paseo del Collado in Laguardia provides a fitting backdrop for this contemporary tribute, allowing visitors to connect with the history and culture that the fabulist brought to life through his stories. The intricate detail of the bust, with its frilled collar and thoughtful expression, invites viewers to ponder the depth and complexity of de Samaniego's literary contributions. Vicente Larrea Aldama, a respected artist of his time, expertly conveyed the essence of the fabulist's face, revealing a man of intelligence, creativity, and passion for storytelling. As a symbol of Laguardia's rich literary heritage, this bust of Felix Maria de Samaniego serves as a reminder of the power of words to inspire, educate, and entertain, and the enduring impact of the written word on the human spirit.
