EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning triptych of paintings captures the enigmatic and regal presence of King Edward VIII as he would have appeared in his full Coronation regalia. Created by renowned Italian artist Fortunino Matania for a special Coronation number prepared in advance by the Illustrated London News in 1936, these works of art were never published due to the unexpected and historic events that unfolded. King Edward VIII, the Duke of Windsor, is depicted in the majestic setting of Westminster Abbey, wearing the traditional robes and regalia of the British monarchy. The King is shown holding the sceptre and orb, symbolizing his power and authority, while the ermine-trimmed cloak and crimson velvet mantle add to the grandeur of the scene. The intricate details of the Coronation crown, adorned with precious stones and gold, can be seen atop the King's head. The year 1936 brought a significant crisis to the British monarchy when King Edward VIII, who was known for his unconventional ways, chose to abdicate the throne in order to marry the twice-divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson. The Coronation number, which was to be published in the Illustrated London News, was never released as the King's abdication took place before the ceremony could take place. These beautiful paintings by Fortunino Matania offer a glimpse into what could have been, showcasing the grandeur and tradition of the British Coronation ceremony and the enigmatic figure of King Edward VIII.
