The fort, which can be seen in the background, was a crucial defensive structure during the colonial era, with soldiers diligently guarding its ramparts. Inhambane is one of the oldest settlements on Mozambique's eastern coast, with evidence of trade dating back to the 11th century. Dhows, traditional sailing vessels used in the Indian Ocean, traded here, and Inhambane was a significant stopover for these vessels. Muslim and Persian traders were among the first outsiders to arrive in the area by sea, and they traded valuable commodities such as pearls and ambergris. Chibuene, a nearby settlement in the south, was also an important trading center.
