EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print showcases the cover of The Dump - XXIII Division magazine, Volume 1, Number 1, dated Christmas 1915. The Dump was the official publication of the XXIII American Expeditionary Forces (A.E.F.) during World War I. Established in October 1915, the XXIII Division was one of the first American units to arrive in Europe and saw action on the Western Front. The cover image features a soldier in a winter uniform, holding a rifle and gazing off into the distance, with the caption "The Dump" written in bold letters above his head. The title of the magazine is prominently displayed below, along with the volume number, issue number, and date. The simple yet striking design reflects the wartime era and the soldiers' determination and resilience in the face of adversity. The contents of The Dump included news from the front lines, articles on military strategy and tactics, profiles of soldiers and units, poetry, and humor. It served as a source of morale-boosting entertainment and information for the soldiers, helping to keep them connected to their families and the world back home. This historic print offers a glimpse into the daily life and experiences of American soldiers during World War I, providing valuable insights into the social, cultural, and military history of the time. The XXIII Division's publication of The Dump is a testament to the importance of communication and community in the midst of war, and serves as a reminder of the sacrifices and triumphs of those who served.
