Are We Downhearted? WWI postcard
Patriotic WWI poem - relating to the early part of the conflict and the Little Army sent in as the British Expeditionary Force to combat German advances in 1914/15. The link is made to the African Wars and the outnumbered British colonial forces under Frederick Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts one of the most successful British commanders of the 19th century. The BEF did remarkably well (considering the size of the force it faced), and German advances were as good as halted following fierce fighting at Le Cateau, Mons, Aisne and Ypres. Date: 1915

EDITORS COMMENTS
Are We Downhearted? - A Patriotic WWI Poem and the indomitable Spirit of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) Amidst the somber backdrop of World War I, this poignant postcard titled "Are We Downhearted?" serves as a testament to the unwavering resolve and determination of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) during the early stages of the conflict. The image features a group of soldiers standing tall, their faces adorned with the Union Jack and the Japanese flag, symbolizing the alliance between Britain and Japan against the German forces. The poem inscribed on the postcard speaks to the spirits of the British soldiers, who, despite being outnumbered and facing formidable opposition, remained undeterred. The lines "Are we downhearted? No, we're not! We'll fight it out on land and sea and air. With Roberts as our guide, we'll conquer or perish there." pay homage to the legendary British commander, Frederick Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts. Roberts, one of the most successful British commanders of the 19th century, led the British colonial forces in Africa with great success. The BEF, sent to Europe in 1914 to combat German advances, remarkably held their ground against seemingly insurmountable odds. The fierce fighting at Le Cateau, Mons, Aisne, and Ypres halted the German advances, lifting the spirits of the Allies and the Belgian and French forces. The Russian and Serbian armies joined the cause, further bolstering the morale of the troops. This poignant postcard, created in 1915, serves as a powerful reminder of the indomitable spirit of the British Expeditionary Force during the early days of World War I. The image of the soldiers standing proudly, their faces adorned with the Union Jack and the Japanese flag, symbolizes the unity and determination of the Allies in the face of adversity.
