This evocative photograph captures a young girl from Djibouti, East Africa (then known as French Somaliland), in the act of cleaning her teeth in 1905. The girl's introspective expression and focused gaze add depth to the image, while the intricate details of her traditional attire and accessories are a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the region. The girl's left arm is adorned with various bangles, bracelets, and armlets, while her neck is adorned with a beautiful necklace made of beads. Her hair, styled in an afro, frames her face and adds to the overall sense of authenticity. In her right hand, she holds a toothbrush made of twigs or animal bones, which she uses to clean her teeth with great care. The importance of dental hygiene is evident in this image, as the girl takes her time to ensure that each tooth is properly cleaned. This simple act serves as a reminder of the universal human need for good health and the importance of maintaining proper oral hygiene, even in the most remote corners of the world. This historical photograph offers a glimpse into the past, providing a window into the daily life of a young girl in Djibouti over a century ago.
