EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment during the early days of the First World War, as Belgian troops defend the Willebroek Canal in Belgium against the advancing German army. The canal, also known as the Brussels-Scheldt Maritime Canal, is a vital waterway that links Brussels to the River Scheldt, making it a strategic target for both sides. In this image, we see soldiers taking a brief respite from the intense fighting, leaning their rifles against sandbags piled high along the canal banks. The men appear weary but determined, their expressions reflecting the gravity of the situation. The waterway behind them is calm, yet the ominous clouds on the horizon hint at the impending danger. The German advance on Antwerp, which began on August 31, 1914, put the city and its surrounding areas under siege, and the Belgian army, along with British and French forces, fought valiantly to hold the line. This powerful image serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery and resilience of the soldiers who defended the waterways of Flanders during the Great War.
