EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful engraving from 1850 captures a poignant moment "Between Decks on an Emigrant Ship", showcasing distressed needlewomen preparing for their voyage to Australia. These women, living in poverty and with only their belongings to their name, are seen making themselves comfortable before the journey begins.
Thanks to the efforts of Mr Sidney Herbert and the Rev Quekett, a charity was set up to rescue many of these girls from destitution and provide them with a chance at starting anew in Australia. This historical image serves as a reminder of the importance of compassion and support for those in need.
The scene depicted in this print is both heartbreaking and hopeful - as these women face uncertainty and hardship, they also hold onto dreams of a better life on the other side of the ocean. The details captured by the artist convey a sense of resilience and determination that is truly inspiring.
As we reflect on this piece of history, let us remember the impact that acts of kindness can have on those facing adversity. It is through initiatives like this charity that lives were changed for the better, offering hope where there once was despair.
