EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite illustration is part of LS Plate 166 from the esteemed John Reeves Collection, showcasing the captivating Cyprinus hybiscoides, commonly known as the common carp. John Reeves, a 19th Century Tea Inspector, embarked on a remarkable journey to Canton, China with the primary intention of expanding a comprehensive collection of Chinese natural history drawings. The resulting body of work, now housed in the Natural History Museum in London, is a testament to Reeves' dedication and the rich biodiversity of Asia. The common carp, a member of the Cyprinidae family and Cypriniformes order, is a widely distributed freshwater fish. Its distinctive features include a large, rounded dorsal fin, a long, flat body, and a prominent, barbeled mouth. The common carp is a ray-finned fish, belonging to the class Actinopterygii and the phylum Osteichthyes. This illustration captures the intricate details of the common carp's scales, fins, and gill structures, providing a stunning and accurate representation of this versatile and important species. The common carp is not only a popular ornamental fish, but also an essential food source for many communities around the world. Its adaptability to various water conditions and ability to thrive in both fresh and brackish waters has contributed to its widespread distribution and success.
