EDITORS COMMENTS
Cupboard Love" is a charming and humorous early 20th century photograph by Ethel Parkinson that captures the essence of tradition and innocence. The image features a little Dutch boy and girl, both dressed in authentic Dutch costumes, with the boy showing a playful interest in the girl, but alas, it's only her basket of fruit that has caught his eye. The boy, with his clogs on and a mischievous grin, reaches out to touch the apples in the girl's basket, which she protectively holds close to her chest. The girl, dressed in a traditional Dutch dress with an apron, looks at the boy with a mix of amusement and annoyance. Her basket, filled with an abundance of ripe and colorful fruit, is a symbol of the bountiful harvest and the importance of food in Dutch culture. The setting of the photograph is a traditional Dutch cupboard, with its intricate woodwork and shelves, adding to the historical and authentic feel of the image. The cupboard, a common feature in Dutch homes during this era, serves as a backdrop to the scene and emphasizes the traditional and cultural significance of the photograph. Ethel Parkinson, a skilled photographer, expertly captures the moment of playful interaction between the two children, while also highlighting the rich cultural heritage and history of the Dutch people. This photograph is not only a delightful depiction of childhood innocence but also a valuable historical record of Dutch customs and traditions.
