EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the essence of Walter William Read, a renowned cricketer who graced the Surrey County Cricket Club from 1855 to 1907. The image, taken during the late Victorian era, showcases Read in his prime, exuding confidence and focus as he holds his cricket bat, poised and ready for the next delivery. Born on March 11, 1855, in London, Read began his cricket career at an early age and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a key player for Surrey. His exceptional skills as a batsman and occasional wicket-keeper earned him a place in the Surrey team for over five decades, making him one of the longest-serving cricketers in the history of the game. Read's contributions to cricket were not limited to his performances on the field. He was also a respected administrator, serving as the Surrey County Cricket Club's secretary from 1893 to 1902. During his tenure, he oversaw the construction of the iconic Oval pavilion, which remains a landmark of the cricket world to this day. This photograph is a testament to Read's enduring legacy in the sport of cricket. It provides a glimpse into the past, offering a window into the history of the game and the men who shaped it.
