EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from the Apocalypse of Angers tapestry series, created in the late 14th century in France. The scene depicts Christ, with a serene expression, holding a sword in His mouth. This intriguing representation is taken from the third scene of the first tapestry in the series, which illustrates the mystery of the seven candlesticks or churches, as revealed to St. John by Jesus Christ. The tapestry, created between 1375 and 1382, is a masterpiece of International Gothic art, commissioned by Louis I, Duke of Anjou, after cartons attributed to Jean de Bruges. The vivid colors and intricate details of the tapestry bring the biblical narrative to life. The sword in Christ's mouth symbolizes the Word of God, which is a central theme in the Book of Revelation. The scene represents the power and authority of Christ, as He reveals the mysteries of the Apocalypse to St. John. The Apocalypse of Angers tapestry series is a remarkable testament to the artistic and religious traditions of the Middle Ages. The series, which is now housed in Angers Castle in Maine-et-Loire, France, is a must-see for anyone interested in the history of art, religion, and European culture.
