EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricately patterned shell of Ceratites nodosus, an exquisite example of an ammonoid, an extinct group of marine invertebrates related to the modern Nautilus. The Ceratites belonged to the suborder Ceratitida, and the family Ceratitidae, characterized by their complex and often ornate suture lines. The sutures, the lines of growth in the shell, are clearly visible in this specimen, revealing the intricate design that once protected and supported the soft body of this ancient mollusk. Ammonoids, classified under the phylum Cephalopoda and class Cephalopoda, were buoyant, cephalic, and molluscan animals, possessing a chambered shell and a soft body. They lived during the Mesozoic and Paleozoic eras, inhabiting the world's oceans. The shells of ammonoids were not only used for protection but also played a crucial role in their buoyancy, allowing them to control their depth in the water column. The Ceratites nodosus, with its distinctive nodose sutures, is a beautiful reminder of the rich diversity of life that once thrived in our oceans. This fossil, a testament to the intricacies of nature, invites us to delve deeper into the fascinating world of the ammonoids and the invaluable insights they provide into Earth's ancient past. This stunning image is a treasure from the annals of natural history, captured by the skilled lens of Richard Fortey, a renowned British paleontologist, and author. Fortey's work, showcasing the wonders of the natural world, continues to inspire and captivate audiences, reminding us of the importance of preserving and understanding our planet's rich biosphere.
