EDITORS COMMENTS
This cartoon, dated 1916, depicts a French gendarme in all his officious glory as he delivers a letter to a colonel during the tumultuous period of World War I. The gendarme, with his stern expression and imposing stature, clutches the envelope tightly in one hand while extending the other in a formal salute, his red nose and plump cheeks adding a touch of humor to the otherwise serious scene. The colonel, dressed in his full military regalia, including a sword, helmet, and map, receives the letter with a look of mild annoyance, perhaps more preoccupied with the war effort than the arrival of this mundane communication. The gendarme's pride in his role in the war is evident in his proud posture and the confident tilt of his kepi. This evocative image offers a glimpse into the daily life of the soldiers and civilians on the home front during the First World War, providing a fascinating historical insight into a time of great upheaval and change.
