EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the historic moment as the last British troops of the 1st Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry (Prince Albert's), bid farewell to India in 1948. The image, taken by Hunnar Ltd, shows the soldiers on parade in Bombay, with the iconic Taj Mahal Hotel visible in the background. The departure of the British military marked the end of British rule in India, which had begun in 1858 following the Indian Rebellion. After the independence of India and Pakistan in August 1947, British regiments were gradually withdrawn from the subcontinent, with a well-planned and orderly withdrawal from the tribal regions of the North-West Frontier. The Somerset Light Infantry, one of the oldest infantry regiments in the British Army, was the last unit to leave India, embarking from Bombay on 28 February 1948. This ceremonial colour presentation took place before their departure, making this photograph a poignant reminder of a significant moment in history.
