EDITORS COMMENTS
December 1917: A British Artillery Dash Through a French Town - In this evocative image by renowned war artist Fortunino Matania, we witness the raw power and chaos of the First World War as a British artillery piece is rushed at a gallop through the market-place of a French town. The square, surrounded by shell-damaged buildings, serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of the conflict. A watchful soldier ensures the safety of two young children to the right, keeping them from venturing out into the path of the horses. The carriage-mounted gun, with its menacing barrel, dashes through the town, its presence an ominous harbinger of destruction. The horses, straining at the bit, embody the frenetic energy of the scene. This powerful photograph transports us back in time, allowing us to bear witness to the harsh realities of the Great War and the indomitable spirit of those who lived through it.
