EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork by the renowned Dutch naturalist artist JG Keulemans, featured in Sir Walter Lawry Buller's "A History of the Birds of New Zealand," Vol.2, Plate 30, dates back to 1888. The illustration showcases two distinctive gull species native to New Zealand: the Black-billed Gull (Larus bulleri) and the Red-billed Gull (Larus novaehollandiae scopulinus). The Black-billed Gull, also known as Tarapuka, is a medium-sized gull with a black bill and legs, and a white body. The species is widespread throughout New Zealand, including offshore islands, and is an adaptable bird that thrives in various habitats, from coasts to inland lakes. The Red-billed Gull, or Tarapunga, is a smaller gull with a red bill, legs, and webbed feet. This gull is endemic to New Zealand and is found primarily in the subantarctic islands and the Chatham Islands. The Red-billed Gull is a vital component of the unique ecosystems in these remote locations and is an important scavenger and predator. Keulemans' meticulous watercolor painting masterfully captures the intricacies of these two gull species, providing a glimpse into the rich avian diversity of New Zealand during the late 19th century. The artwork is a testament to the artist's exceptional talent and the dedication of Buller in documenting the natural history of New Zealand's unique wildlife.
