EDITORS COMMENTS
of A Monograph of the Phasianid, or Family of the Pheasants, by Daniel Giraud Elliot, features a stunning depiction of Argusianus argus grayi, commonly known as the great argus. This 19th century illustration, created by the skilled hand of Joseph Wolf, showcases the magnificent crest, intricately patterned feathers, and distinctive facial features of this avian species. The great argus is a large, brown bird native to the forests of Southeast Asia. Known for its impressive size and vibrant plumage, it is a member of the Galliformes order, which includes other birds such as turkeys and quails. In this illustration, we see the great argus in flight, its wings spread wide and its blue-gray feathers creating a striking contrast against the background. Argusianus argus grayi is named for its elaborate crest, which resembles a series of fan-like structures on the head. The bird's face is adorned with a distinctive white stripe that runs from the bill to the back of the head. The great argus is a daytime bird, and can often be found perched in trees or on the forest floor, foraging for food. This beautiful illustration, created in the late 1800s, provides a detailed and accurate record of the anatomy and appearance of the great argus. It is a testament to the meticulous work of both Elliot and Wolf, and remains an important contribution to the scientific study of avian species. The intricate details of the feathers, the subtle shading, and the lifelike quality of the illustration make it a true masterpiece of natural history art.
