EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, we find ourselves transported back in time to the Gentlemen's Driving Park in Morrisania, New York, on July 8, 1882. The scene is set for an exhilarating trotting match between two celebrated horses, Team Edward and Swiveller, owned by the esteemed Frank Work Esq. of New York. The horses, in their prime, are poised and ready to compete against the clock, with an impressive purse of $1,000 at stake. John Murphy, an accomplished driver, takes the reins of Team Edward, a powerful and agile horse, while Swiveller, equally impressive, is driven by an unidentified driver. The horses and their drivers are focused, their eyes on the finish line as they prepare to race against the clock. The setting sun casts a warm glow over the park, adding an air of excitement and anticipation to the scene. The match is on, and the horses take off at a gallop. The crowd, gathered around the track, watches with bated breath as Team Edward and Swiveller put their speed and stamina to the test. The clock ticks away, and the horses race against time, their hooves thundering on the ground. And then, in a triumphant moment, Team Edward and Swiveller cross the finish line, victorious. The clock reads 2:20, and the crowd erupts in cheers and applause. Frank Work Esq., the proud owner, watches with a satisfied smile as his horses take their well-deserved victory lap. This photograph captures not only the thrill of the race but also the spirit of competition and the joy of a well-executed victory.
