EDITORS COMMENTS
Angels over Stormy Sea Date: Circa 1870 Description: This evocative image captures the raw power and unpredictability of the sea as a storm rages around a sailing ship, threatening to run it aground. Five angels, their wings outstretched, implore the heavens for mercy on behalf of the beleaguered vessel and its crew. The ship's sails are tattered and torn, billowing in the wind as the waves crash against its hull. The crew, desperate and fearful, cling to the rigging, their faces etched with determination and prayer. Historical Context: This powerful and dramatic scene is a common theme in maritime art, reflecting the deep-rooted fear and respect for the sea and the dangers it poses to sailors. The image is reminiscent of the many stories of ships lost at sea, and the belief that divine intervention could save even the most perilous of voyages. This particular print, from the Mary Evans Picture Library, is believed to date from around 1870, a time when sailing was still a major mode of transportation and the sea continued to claim countless lives. Concepts: This image explores themes of danger, survival, and the power of faith in the face of adversity. The stormy sea and the ship in peril serve as a reminder of the raw and untamed forces of nature, while the angels represent the guardians and protectors that sailors called upon in times of need. The concept of mercy is also central to the image, as the angels plead for the lives of the sailors and the safe passage of their vessel. Overall, this print is a beautiful and poignant reminder of the rich history and traditions of the sea and the enduring human spirit that has kept sailors afloat for centuries.
