EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in the 1910s, depicts a group of Chouia women from Algeria gathered around a still fully-functioning Roman fountain in the ancient city of Timgad. Nestled in the Aures Mountains, Timgad was constructed by Emperor Trajan in AD 100 as a bastion against the Berbers. The town was meticulously planned in the classic Roman style, and its exceptional preservation is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Roman Empire. The women in the image are filling their waterskins at the fountain, which features a cerubic figurine of a mannequin with a "pissing boy" statue, a common feature in Roman fountains. The intricate details of the fountain's architecture, including its Corinthian columns and ornate carvings, are evident in the photograph. The Chouia women, dressed in traditional North African attire, add a vibrant and authentic touch to the scene. Their presence at the fountain highlights the enduring connection between the local population and the ancient Roman remains that continue to define the cultural landscape of Algeria. The Aures Mountains, which loom in the background, add a sense of grandeur and mystery to the photograph. The rugged terrain and stark contrast between the modern world and the ancient Roman ruins create a breathtaking tableau that speaks to the rich history and complex layers of Algerian culture. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of the Roman Empire and the ways in which its influence continues to shape the cultural and historical landscape of Algeria and Africa as a whole. The preservation of Timgad and its ancient Roman remains is a testament to the importance of historical sites and the role they play in shaping our understanding of the past.
