EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the bustling scene on Boulevard Seguin in Oran, Algeria, circa 1905. The image transports us back in time to an era of colonial rule, as European settlers go about their daily lives against the backdrop of the North African coastline. Boulevard Seguin, named after the French naval officer who played a significant role in the conquest of Algeria, is a wide, tree-lined avenue that runs parallel to the Mediterranean Sea. In this photograph, we see a horse-drawn carriage making its way along the boulevard, surrounded by a sea of people and animals. European women in elegant hats and long dresses stroll along the sidewalk, while men in suits and fedoras engage in animated conversations. The vibrant market scene in the foreground adds to the sense of activity and energy. Veiled women haggle over produce with local vendors, while children play in the dusty streets. Donkeys and mules laden with goods make their way through the crowd, adding to the cacophony of sounds and smells. The photograph also showcases the unique architectural blend of European and Islamic influences that characterized Oran during this period. In the background, we see the whitewashed walls of European houses with their wrought-iron balconies, while the minaret of a mosque rises in the distance. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich cultural tapestry of Oran during the early 20th century, a time of great change and transformation in Algeria's history.
