EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the essence of the 1923 production of "Rats," a groundbreaking musical comedy that left audiences enchanted. The image features three of the show's most prominent stars: Alfred Lester, Gertrude Lawrence, and Rex O'Malley. Alfred Lester, the suave and debonair leading man, is seen here in his Oriental-inspired costume, complete with a red turban and elaborate beard. His expressive eyes and confident posture exude charm and charisma, making him the perfect choice for the role of the mysterious Prince Chulalongkorn. Gertrude Lawrence, a legendary actress and singer, gracefully poses in the foreground, her elegant gown and striking features drawing the eye. Known for her versatility and captivating stage presence, Lawrence brought depth and nuance to her role as the feisty and independent Princess Phra Chulalok. Rex O'Malley, a versatile actor and comedian, rounds out the trio with his mischievous grin and playful expression. In "Rats," he brought the character of Billy the Rat to life, delivering laughs and adding a touch of lightheartedness to the production. The photograph was taken during a performance at the Adelphi Theatre in London, where "Rats" premiered in 1923. The production was a sensation, running for over 400 performances and cementing the careers of its stars. This image is a testament to the magic of live theatre and the enduring appeal of this classic musical comedy.
