EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures a significant moment in the history of Abyssinia, now known as Ethiopia, during the Italo-Abyssinian War of 1889. At the center of the image stands Negus (Emperor) Menelik II, the powerful and visionary leader who successfully defended his kingdom against Italian colonial ambitions. Menelik II, born in 1844, ascended to the throne in 1865 and ruled until his death in 1913. He is depicted here in his regal attire, adorned with the traditional Ethiopian crown and holding a scepter, exuding an air of authority and determination. The background of the engraving shows the rugged terrain of Abyssinia, symbolizing the challenging geography that the Italian forces had to contend with in their attempt to invade. The Italo-Abyssinian War began in 1887 when Menelik II signed a treaty with Italy, granting them certain territorial concessions. However, tensions escalated, and in 1889, the Italians launched a full-scale invasion. Menelik II skillfully led his forces, employing guerrilla warfare tactics and utilizing the mountainous terrain to his advantage. The Italians were eventually forced to retreat, marking a major victory for Abyssinia and solidifying Menelik II's status as a legendary emperor. This historical engraving is a testament to the resilience and determination of the Abyssinian people and their leader during a pivotal moment in their history. It serves as a reminder of the rich and complex history of Ethiopia and the courage of its leaders in the face of external threats.
