EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Young couple and an old woman with money box (Unequal love)", we are transported back in time to witness a poignant scene captured by the anonymous artist, Jan Saenredam, and Hendrick Goltzius between 1589 and 1607. The image portrays a young couple standing beside an elderly woman who holds a money box. The composition is rich with symbolism, as it explores the theme of unequal love. The young man tenderly tries to keep his partner close while she puts coins into the money box held by the old woman. Their attire reflects their social status; he wears a bow hat and wide collar, while she dons a pleated garment with shoulder wheels. Underneath the image lies text written in Latin and Dutch, perhaps hinting at deeper meanings or conveying messages about societal norms during that era. The presence of poetry adds another layer of intrigue to this enigmatic artwork. Quint Lox's skillful reproduction of this historical piece allows us to appreciate its beauty and contemplate its underlying narrative. As we gaze upon this print from Liszt Collection, we are reminded of how art has the power to transcend time, evoking emotions and sparking our imagination even centuries after its creation.
