EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection showcases a significant moment in history, featuring a senior merchant of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and his wife. Presumably Jacob Mathieusen, this married couple is elegantly portrayed against the backdrop of the bustling Fleet in the Roads of Batavia. Painted by Aelbert Cuyp between 1640 and 1660, this canvas captures not only their union but also provides a glimpse into the maritime activities during that era. The image depicts an Indian boy holding a parasol over the couple, providing shade from the sun as they stand together. The presence of a manservant or footman further emphasizes their social status and wealth. The sailing-ships in the background symbolize both trade and adventure, representing VOC's dominance in international commerce during that time. With its meticulous details and vibrant colors brought to life through oil paint on canvas, this artwork offers viewers an immersive experience into historical events. It serves as a testament to love and partnership amidst an era defined by exploration and economic expansion
