EDITORS COMMENTS
This black chalk print, titled "View St Peter Vatican Janiculum 1754" transports viewers to the heart of Rome in the 18th century. Created by Richard Wilson, a talented British artist from Penegoes, Wales, this artwork showcases his mastery of drawing and his deep appreciation for Italian landscapes. Wilson's journey to Italy in 1750 was driven by his ambition to advance his career as an artist. He hoped that studying ancient works of art, sculpture, and architecture would widen his knowledge and enable him to create breathtaking pieces like this one. His efforts paid off when he won prestigious portrait commissions from young British aristocrats on their grand tours. In this particular print, Wilson skillfully captures the iconic view of St. Peter's Basilica from the Janiculum Hill. The meticulous use of black chalk combined with stumping techniques creates a sense of depth and texture that brings the scene to life. To enhance certain details, Wilson has deftly employed white highlights on the sheet. As we gaze upon this remarkable artwork today, we are transported back in time to experience Rome through Wilson's eyes. This print not only showcases Wilson's artistic talent but also serves as a testament to his dedication and passion for capturing the beauty of Italy's architectural wonders.
