EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Soldier Courtship Life Death 1" takes us back to the year 1781, capturing a moment in history through the art of etching stipple. The plate measures approximately 15 7/16 x 17 1/2 inches (39.2 x 44.5 cm), showcasing intricate details that bring this scene to life. The image portrays a soldier engaged in courtship, highlighting the delicate balance between love and war during this tumultuous period. It serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities faced by those who fought for their countries while also seeking companionship and connection amidst chaos. Etched and published by Robert Blyth, a British artist active from 1750 to 1784, this print is based on an original work by John Hamilton Mortimer (1740–1779). Mortimer was known for his ability to capture dramatic scenes with great emotion, and this piece is no exception. The setting appears to be Eastbourne, where Mortimer resided before his untimely death in London at the age of just thirty-nine. Through skillful use of light and shadow, he masterfully conveys both the joys and sorrows experienced by soldiers during their courtships - moments that could ultimately lead either to life or death on the battlefield. As we gaze upon this remarkable artwork from Liszt Collection, we are transported back in time; it serves as a testament not only to artistic talent but also to the enduring human
