EDITORS COMMENTS
In this self-portrait, Samuel van Hoogstraten, a renowned Dutch artist from the 17th century, presents himself as both an observer and creator of his own world. The composition is meticulously arranged to showcase the artist's multifaceted talents and interests. Van Hoogstraten confidently gazes at the viewer with a hint of introspection in his eyes. His hand delicately holds a feather pen, symbolizing his mastery of writing and poetry. The initials "J Oudaan" are inscribed on the paper he writes upon, perhaps indicating that he was working on a collaboration or paying homage to another esteemed writer. The aged appearance of Van Hoogstraten's face suggests wisdom gained through experience. Behind him hangs an atlas, representing his fascination with geography and exploration. Above him stretches a firmament adorned with celestial bodies, alluding to his curiosity about the heavens and their mysteries. This print captures not only Van Hoogstraten's physical likeness but also provides insight into his intellectual pursuits and artistic vision. Quint Lox has skillfully reproduced this masterpiece from the Liszt Collection, allowing viewers to appreciate every intricate detail that makes this self-portrait so intriguing
