EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection transports us to the enchanting streets of Rome. The image showcases a section of Via Sacra, one of the most iconic and historic roads in the city. Standing tall along this ancient pathway is an exquisite church dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian. The artist, Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, a Danish master of his craft, has beautifully captured every intricate detail of this architectural marvel. Using graphite and brush with brown ink, he skillfully brings forth the grandeur and elegance of the church's facade. Framing lines add depth to the composition while blue watercolor accents enhance its ethereal quality. Measuring 9 13/16 x 13 3/4 inches (25 x 35 cm), this print exudes a sense of timelessness that transports viewers back to early 19th-century Rome. Eckersberg's meticulous attention to detail allows us to appreciate not only the beauty of this sacred place but also his artistic prowess. As we gaze upon this remarkable artwork, we can't help but feel awe-inspired by both its historical significance and artistic excellence. It serves as a testament to Eckersberg's ability to capture not just physical structures but also their spiritual essence.
