EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Return of the Prodigal Son" created by Claes Jansz. Visscher (II) and David Vinckboons in 1608, we witness a powerful depiction of the renowned biblical parable. The prodigal son, who had once squandered his inheritance on a life of indulgence and excess, now returns home with humility and remorse. The central figure in the image is the prodigal son himself, depicted as he kneels before his father. His worn-out clothes are evidence of his past struggles and waywardness. The father's outstretched arms symbolize forgiveness and unconditional love as he embraces his long-lost child. On either side stand the prodigal son's brothers, observing this poignant reunion with mixed emotions. They represent different reactions to their brother's return: one filled with resentment while the other displays empathy. In the background, we see a grand house that belongs to their parents—a stark contrast to where the prodigal son had found himself during his time away. This imagery emphasizes not only physical but also spiritual transformation—the journey from darkness back into light. As viewers, we are reminded of our own capacity for redemption and forgiveness through this timeless tale. Quint Lox beautifully captures this profound moment in history through an exquisite reproduction that invites contemplation on themes of family dynamics, repentance, and second chances.
