EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the artwork titled "Raufende Bauern" by Adriaen Pietersz. van de Venne, a renowned Dutch painter from Delft who lived between 1589 and 1662. The piece is painted with oil on oak wood, measuring 27 x 21.5 cm. Despite the passage of time, remnants of the artist's signature can still be seen in the lower left corner. The top of the rotulus bears an intriguing inscription: "Tis Jammerlijck" which translates to "It is lamentable". This enigmatic phrase adds an air of mystery to this already fascinating composition. The image captures a moment frozen in time, depicting raufende bauern or quarreling peasants engaged in a heated dispute. Their animated expressions and dynamic gestures convey intense emotions and tension within their rural community. This print offers viewers a glimpse into van de Venne's artistic prowess as he masterfully portrays human drama through his brushstrokes. The rich colors and intricate details are beautifully preserved in this reproduction from the Liszt Collection
