EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait print showcases Sara de Haan, the esteemed widow of Cornelis Hartsen, a prominent underwriter from Amsterdam. Painted by Jan Willem Pieneman between 1820 and 1832, this masterpiece captures Sara's elegance and poise. In the painting, Sara is depicted sitting to the left in a half-length pose. Her gaze is gentle yet commanding, reflecting her strength as a woman who navigated life after her husband's passing. Adorning her head is a cap tilted slightly to the side, adding an air of sophistication to her appearance. Pieneman's masterful use of oil paint brings out every intricate detail in this artwork. The texture and depth created on canvas make it come alive with vibrant colors that beautifully complement Sara's features. Sara de Haan was not only known for her beauty but also for her intelligence and business acumen. As the widow of an Amsterdam insurer, she managed their affairs with great success during challenging times. This print serves as a testament to both Sara de Haan's remarkable character and Pieneman's artistic prowess. It invites viewers into the world of Dutch high society during the early 19th century while capturing the essence of one extraordinary woman who defied societal expectations
