EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable oil canvas portrait of Madeleine Castaing, created around 1929 by the talented French artist Chaim Soutine. The painting measures 39 3/8 inches by 28 3/4 inches (100 cm by 73 cm) and beautifully captures the essence of its subject. Madeleine Castaing, born in Smilovitchi, Lithuania in 1894, was a successful Parisian interior decorator and antiquarian. In the early years of her career, she met Chaim Soutine and became one of his important patrons. This particular portrait reflects their close relationship as well as Castaing's unique sense of style. The composition exudes an air of elegance and mystery with its rich colors and expressive brushstrokes. Soutine masterfully captures Castaing's enigmatic personality through her piercing gaze and confident posture. The play between light and shadow adds depth to the painting, enhancing its overall allure. Throughout the following decade after this portrait was made, both Soutine and Castaing continued to leave their mark on the art world. Their collaboration resulted in numerous extraordinary works that are still celebrated today. This print from Liszt Collection allows us to appreciate not only Soutine's artistic genius but also Madeleine Castaing's significant contributions to the world of design. It serves as a reminder of their enduring legacy within both the realms of artistry and interior decoration.
