EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Plate 27 Dutch Surprise Attack Roman Camp Moselle" takes us back in time to a dramatic moment during war. The image showcases the intense battle between the Romans and Batavians, two ancient civilizations locked in conflict. Created by Antonio Tempesta, an Italian artist from Florence, this etching captures the chaos and tension of the battlefield. The scene depicts a surprise attack launched by the Dutch forces on a Roman camp located near the Moselle River. The intricate details bring this historical event to life, showcasing soldiers engaged in fierce combat with weapons raised high. Every stroke of Tempesta's masterful hand adds depth and emotion to each figure portrayed. This particular print is part of a larger series called "Romanorvm et Batavorvm Societas" which was first issued in 1611. It is believed that Otto van Veen, a Netherlandish artist from Leiden who worked closely with Tempesta, provided inspiration for this piece. Measuring approximately 6 11/16 x 8 5/16 inches (17 x 21 cm), this print is an exquisite example of artistry and historical documentation combined. As we gaze upon it, we are transported back centuries ago to witness firsthand the bravery and turmoil experienced by those caught up in these ancient conflicts.
