EDITORS COMMENTS
In this niello print by Peregrino da Cesena, we are transported to a mythical realm where a satyress tenderly feeds two children. Created between 1505 and 1520, this Panel of Ornament with a Satyress showcases the artist's exceptional skill in capturing intricate details and conveying emotions through his work. The composition is rich with symbolism and allegory, inviting us to delve into its narrative. The satyress, a half-human half-goat creature from Greek mythology known for its wild nature, displays unexpected tenderness as she nurtures the young ones. Her expression exudes warmth and compassion, while the children eagerly receive her nourishment. Da Cesena's mastery of niello technique is evident in every line and contour of this print. Niello is an ancient engraving method that involves incising designs onto metal plates before filling them with black enamel-like substance. This meticulous process adds depth and texture to the artwork, enhancing its visual impact. Quint Lox has expertly captured this remarkable piece from the Liszt Collection in all its glory. Through his lens, we can appreciate not only Da Cesena's artistic prowess but also the timeless beauty of Renaissance art itself. Whether displayed in a gallery or cherished within your own collection, this print serves as a testament to both historical craftsmanship and Quint Lox's talent for preserving cultural treasures through photography.
