EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection showcases an orphan, captured in a poignant moment circa 1879. The etching is delicately crafted on laid paper, measuring approximately 22 1/16 x 12 1/16 inches (561 x 307 cm). Created by James Tissot, a renowned French artist born in Nantes in 1836 and passed away in Chenecey-Buillon in 1902, this print exemplifies his mastery of printmaking as a means of disseminating his painted compositions. The subject matter of this particular piece tells a compelling story. The young orphan depicted here evokes both sympathy and curiosity. Exhibited prominently against a backdrop that hints at mystery and melancholy, the viewer is drawn into the narrative woven within this image. Tissot's artistry shines through as he captures every intricate detail with precision and emotion. This specific work was created during the same decade when Tissot's companion Kathleen Newton and their daughter were actively involved in acting parts for morbid dramas. As we gaze upon this remarkable photo print, we are transported to another time - one filled with both hardship and resilience. It serves as a testament to Tissot's ability to evoke powerful emotions through his art while also shedding light on societal issues such as orphanhood.
